New Delhi, June 13. (UNI): Eminent filmmaker, painter and Urdu poet Muzaffar Ali, known for his feature film `Umrao Jaan' and several short films, has received the Withrow Chair award from Deep Springs College in Salt Lake, California. The Deep Springs College is unique as it has only 26 students staying on a 3000-acre plot, which houses their college. While the students do not pay any fees, they tend their own land and use the income from that to run the institution. The students make all decisions. The poet was selected for the award on the basis of information available about him on his website and his study of Sufi music. A representative of the Deep Springs College went all the way to Kotwara, a small town north of Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh to meet Ali before making a final decision. Ali, who recently went to the US to receive the award, had delivered two lectures in the college: one on `Sufi Art - Journey Through Life' and `Voice of the Desert - Journey to Deep Springs'. |
